The Center for Book Arts Poetry Chapbook Competition
The Center for Book Arts invites submissions to its annual Poetry
Chapbook Competition. The deadline for the 2009 competition is December
1, 2008. The winning manuscript will be chosen in April 2008 and will
be awarded with the publication of a beautifully designed,
letterpress-printed, limited-edition chapbook printed and bound by
artists at the Center for Book Arts. The edition is limited to 100
signed and numbered copies, ten of which are reserved for the author
and the remainder of which will be offered for sale through the Center.
The winning poet will also receive a cash award of $500, and a $500
honorarium for a reading, to be held at The Center in the fall of 2008.

PHILBRICK POETRY Award accepting manuscripts of up to 25 pages, July 15
until October 15. Judge: Marilyn Nelson. Winner receives $500 and
chapbook publication. New England residents with no previously
published books.

2009 ESSENCE Short Fiction Contest
Dream of being the next Terry McMillan or E. Lynn Harris? It just might
happen. Start by entering our 2009 Essence Short Fiction contest. The
winner will be announced at next year's Essence Literary Awards.
The First Prize Winner will receive a cash prize of $1,000 and
publication of her or his contest entry in a winter 2009 issue of
ESSENCE magazine. The submissions of the First, Second and Third Prize
Winners as well as those of the Seven Honorable Mentions will be
featured on ESSENCE.COM during the first quarter of 2009.

2009 ESSENCE Short Fiction Contest

A prize of $15,000 is given annually to a U.S. writer to honor a work
of fiction published in the previous year. Additional prizes of $5,000
each are awarded to four finalists. Lee K. Abbott, Randall Keenan, and
Antonya Nelson will judge. Publishers, agents, or authors may nominate
novels or short story collections published in 2008 by submitting four
copies of each book (or bound galleys) by October 31. There is no entry
